Rewrite Redemption by J.H. Walker
She’s sixteen. He’s seventeen. They don’t know each other…at least not yet.

She has a secret and her whole life revolves around keeping it. Every few months and with little warning, she simply disappears, pulled into the past for hours or even days. She’s terrified it will happen in front of someone, changing her life forever. So far, the only witnesses have been her parents, and that didn’t end well. She has no control over it and no idea why it happens to her.

She wants answers.

He has answers—at least he understands what’s going on. He has a secret, too. He’s part of an organization that goes back in time to rewrite reality. But he also has a problem. He broke the organization’s number-one rule by altering his own timeline. As punishment, he’s been blocked from time travel, which is most unfortunate. Because the changes he made to his timeline, accidentally resulted in disaster for his family. A disaster he’s now prevented from repairing. No one can travel beneath the organization’s radar except a Shadow. But they’re rare, so rare he’s never even met one.

Then he moves to her town.

I was a little apprehensive when I first read about the book because it involved time travel. Many books involving time travel are pretty much hit-or-miss. They either are really good, or they get extremely confusing and make your head hurt (and then you just want to put it down). Luckily, this one was a hit!

So we start with A.J.’s point of view, and it alternates between A.J. and Constantine’s points of view. This is pretty hard to truly get the hang of because the name ‘A.J.’ and ‘Constantine’ are only at the beginning of the chapter for the first two chapters, and for the rest of the chapters you have to assume that the pattern continues.

What was hard for me to really get used to was the names. A.J. is the heroine’s name and Constantine is the hero’s name. I always thought that Constantine was a female name, so it was difficult for me to really equate that with the hero, especially since the points of view were constantly alternating between the protagonists.

While the explanations for the time travel were a bit confusing, after re-reading them a few times they actually made sense. (Then again, I’m not an expert in science so I don’t know if they actually made sense in a scientific way.) There were some descriptions that, again, I had to re-read to truly make sense of them, but once I re-read them I was fully on board.

Yes, the novel had drama and teenage angst, but it wasn’t full of it to the point of annoyance. This is a young adult book, so the teen angst was kind of to be expected. Luckily, it was a minimum amount because the whole plotline was much more important.

The novel wasn’t perfect, though. I did find myself flipping through pages and pages of inner monologue where there was nothing pertinent to the plot—just a lot of repeating what we already knew. Both Constantine and A.J. seemed to be full of inner monologue: self-doubting, self-loathing, and, of course, mooning over the other person. (A YA book wouldn’t be complete without the mooning.)

I know a lot of people will complain about the almost-insta-love, but I actually didn’t mind. Because of the fact that both A.J. and Constantine are different and they formed a connection, it seemed logical. However, I did have to flip through a few pages of daydreaming after this.

The end was not how I expected it to end, however. All of their problems were solved, yes—but it seemed like it was a little too easy. There could have been so many complications to how their problems were solved and I was thinking there was going to be quite a bit of backlash to what happened. Not so. Even so, I liked the ending—it was happy and not a cliffhanger! This book does have a sequel, but I was left satisfied with the ending and I am definitely not left hanging.

I recommend this book for those who like science fiction/time travel, romance, and happy endings!
