Early Review on Hollywood House Call

WARNING: This post and the links from it contain adult content. If you are under 18 years of age or if such content offends you, please EXIT now.
When Jill Wymer contacted me about an early review for Jules Bennett’s new book, I jumped at the chance. Jules’s books are always fun to read and I was ready for some more. Presenting...

Hollywood House Call by Jules Bennett
Brilliant Hollywood cosmetic surgeon Noah Foster has perfection at his fingertips. Even so, he knows better than any man that losing someone you love comes at a cost. Which is why he can’t walk away from Callie Matthews. When an accident shatters her dreams of stardom, he vows to heal her, inside and out.

Yet living in close quarters makes their red-hot attraction impossible to ignore. Being at Callie’s bedside is one thing-and being in her bed is something Noah can’t resist. He doesn’t do commitment...but letting Callie go is impossible....

Review: 3.5 butterflies
First let me say that this is a good book. It really is. The plot was a good one, and I loved what brought these two people together.
However, the main characters sometimes rubbed me the wrong way. Like how Callie was always so concerned about her appearance. I know that to be an actress (her career of choice) you really do have to look your best, but the way that she was always so completely depressed about her scar really irritated me.
Something that I really liked about this though, was the beginning. I don’t like it when the heroine is described as “stunning” or “perfect,” because most women aren’t. But once her accident happened, I realized why this was played up—in order to create the problem that brings these two together and to give Callie a hoop to jump through.
Even so, Callie wasn’t my favorite character in the book.
Noah I liked a bit better. I liked that he was always trying to get Callie to look on the bright side and his passion for trying to get her to see herself better. His problems seemed very real and very big. I liked how he fell in love against his wishes, how we as readers could tell that he was falling in love but he was blind (by choice) to it. Even so, he still did annoy me at times with his “I don’t like her; I can’t like her” attitude.
Honestly, my favorite character in this book was a secondary character. I really liked Max, Noah’s best friend. I wished we could have seen more of him, and I hope we get to see more of him in another book.
The ending left me feeling like it was rushed. Callie finds out about Noah and his past, and she’s rightfully mad. Then Noah shows up and she forgives him just like that. Make him sweat for it, girl! It felt like she said “I’m so mad at y—oh okay, I’ll forgive you.” She could have at least talked to him a bit more and clarified why what he did was not okay.
Nevertheless, this book is a sweet read that is perfect for when you want those inevitable happy endings!

FFT: Setup... Help!

Hi guys!

So I've been wanting to change the setup of my posts a little. I've wanted to change how I do the blurb, but I'm not sure, so I need your help.

Would you like it like this? (which would be the change)
When a magical presence is detected around a recent string of feline slayings, Libby, an enchantress, is determined to discover who is behind the odd deaths. But being a witch gifted by the Goddess won’t protect her from the talented warlock the Coven sends to assist her. Kale weaves a spell more powerful than any she’s ever seen–and he’s sexy as sin. But why he’s even needed for such a simple mission is beyond her.

While having some muscle around can’t hurt her investigation, fighting her growing attraction for Kale is worse than a hex, especially considering she knows he—and their Coven—are hiding something from her. When she turns up clues that point to something far more sinister than slaughtered cats, though, the elusive warlock isn’t the her only concern. She now has a political rebellion on her hands, too. And when the truth about who she really is begins to surface, the only person Libby can trust is herself.
Or like this? (which is the normal way)

Chapter One

He bent over and softly placed his lips on the tip of her nose, just as he had done for as long as she could remember. “I’ll be back,” he whispered quietly, hesitating before finally pulling away.

Their eyes met, and she knew, she could see the familiar distance in them just as she saw only a couple months before. But this time was going to be different. Unlike the last time, she wouldn’t know where to go or what to do. She wouldn’t be able to search for him and take him by the hand, and guide him away.

His eyes slowly moved from hers as he turned and walked towards the door, only to stop a moment, lingering in the doorway like he was second guessing his decision. She slowly sat up, hoping his mind had changed, but her hope quickly vanished as he continued out the door and into the hall.

She watched him through her window, walking down the brightly lit hall, knowing it would be the last time she ever saw him. That it would be the last time she’d hear his voice, the last time his fresh, yet smoky, scent filled her nose. She knew it would be the last time she’d feel her body come to life, ignited like a flame, from the touch of his lips on hers while the warmth of his breath delicately canvassed her body.

He didn’t have to say it; she could sense it, just like she’d done before. Only this time, the gut twisting feeling she got when he spoke, told her what he couldn’t say, and the unspoken words in his eyes. His azure colored eyes that still had a way of making her knees weak and heart slam against her chest, all the while small sparks of electricity soared through her body, all with a single simple look.

Lennox sat there in her room. Dazed, as the numbness slowly crept up and through her body, into her heart and soul, as the voice in her head spoke in loud volumes, telling her over and over, the things she didn’t want to believe. Her eyes, still fixated on his back, watching as he became further and further away; almost out of sight.

She swallowed, trying to rid the dryness that made it hard to breathe. Her mouth finally unfroze and her lips parted. “Caleb,” she spoke quietly, meaning for it to sound louder, so he could hear the gut wrenching pain that filled her normally soft voice, and he’d come back to her. But all that sounded was a whisper ending with a small sob.

He was her all, he’d always be her all, and she knew it the day he unexpectedly walked back into her life. That moment, when their eyes met, she knew they were made for one another, that they were meant to be. They were each other’s missing piece and he found her, in all his gorgeous gratifying glory, grabbing her by the hand, and her entire heart and soul.

Together Lennox and Caleb went places. Places she never, in her life, thought she’d ever go. The things she saw and witnessed are of things no one should have to see or speak of again, because once was enough. His path took them on a journey through hell, right to the burning pit, where, when given the chance to leave, she stayed and fought for him, and a way back.

She did things along the way that she’s not proud of. Things she’ll never be able to forgive herself for, unthinkable things that changed her demeanour and relationships with the people in her life. Lennox, being the typical girl next door, would never, in a million years, do what she did but when it came to Caleb, she’d do anything.

Through it all Lennox lost a lot along the way, important things. But at the time nothing was more important than Caleb and her being together. They learned once that not being together was more toxic then actually being together. So, in her mind, there wasn’t a doubt, or voice, telling her she made the wrong choice five months earlier, when he walked through the doors of Fizzy Wigs; a local cafe in Spruce Hill.

The scary part was, after knowing everything and going through all they went through, Lennox, given the chance to do so, would go back and do it all over; not changing a damn thing.

She continued to watch him walk away, rounding the corner, and disappearing from her sight without a glance back. The breath she didn’t know she’d been holding rushed out, as if someone came up to her, and punched her in the stomach. It was then she realized it hadn’t been enough, none of it was.

And even more heartbreakingly so, neither was she.

At that moment realization hit, and she was on her way back to hell, only this time she was going alone, and the battle out was a far bigger challenge then the last.

With her eyes still on the last place she saw him, silently wishing him to come back, a man in a white coat obstructed her view. Blinking, she looked up at him, his face unreadable as he looked down at the clipboard in his somewhat feminine hands. When he finished flipping through the white sheets of paper, his eyes lifted and met hers.

He witnessed, through her eyes, her world crumble and shatter around her, leaving nothing but an empty, hollow shell in its place.

“Ms Ward....” he said carefully, making note of how delicate and fragile she looked.

Lennox sat there looking at nothing but dead air and the small dust particles as they fluttered around, the room was silent, and she didn’t even hear when the man spoke. It was as if someone had muted real life.

Her mind was on only one thing.

Caleb.

When he left her there in her room, he knew he wasn’t leaving alone, that he was taking her with him, maybe not physically, but in every other way possible. It was more than a piece of her he took, it was more than a part of her, it was every piece.

Every. Single. Fucking. Piece.

And she let him.

“Ms Ward, did you hear what I just said?” the man’s comforting voice echoed through the room.

Lennox shook her head, pushing the thoughts aside, as she looked up at him, and watched his lips move as he repeated the words that not only sent icy waves through her already numb body, but caused what little was left of her world to shatter.

And that’s when it happened, that’s when she began to drown. Drowning in memories, like a surfer in a wild tidal wave, as the gates opened and everything from the past five months came flooding back.

When I got the opportunity to read this book, I jumped at the chance. I’d read an excerpt of The Cat’s Meow before from a blitz that I had done a little while ago and I had really liked it and wanted more. So when I found out that I could get it I was like “PICK ME!”
Thank God I did.

Review: 5 butterflies
This book… Oh my God, this book. It took me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Everything Libby felt I was right there with her. Boy, was I.

Libby is an Enchantress who doesn’t trust warlocks (for some pretty solid reasons, I must say). So when a warlock gets assigned to her case, she is less than thrilled to have him there. Even if he is sexy as hell. She is strong and independent, and doesn’t take crap from anyone (which I admire). I really, really liked Libby and connected to her within the first few pages.

Kale is mysterious, and he doesn’t reveal ANYTHING, which frustrated me to no end. I feared that his reasons were less than honorable and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why he couldn’t reveal what was going on, who he was, where he came from (Y’know, those pesky things). He has an alpha male personality and I really loved him.

But though there is a romance factor in this book, it doesn’t predominate. The mystery factor of “Who’s doing this?” kept me so wrapped up in the book. I honestly did not see most of what happened coming.

Seriously.

If you know me, you know that I can pretty much foresee what’s going to happen. That’s just how I roll. But this book kept me on my toes and had some pretty freaking amazing twists at the end that had me stopping and having a mini freak-out in my room while everyone was asleep. (It’s not fun having to be quiet when your world gets turned upside down.)

Stacey Kennedy spun an amazing tale that never let me on to what was really happening until it happened. The romance, the mystery, the action, and the heat between the main characters kept me flipping the pages frantically (and hyperventilating) so I could see what would happen next.

Though there is no cliffhanger, I cannot wait until the next book of this series. I’m serious. Can I have it? Now?

FFT: Surgery

Good morning, peeps!

As I'm writing this*, I'm in my bed with ice packs to my cheeks and feeling quite dizzy. Why, you ask? (Well, I'm assuming you're asking this :D) Because I've gotten my wisdom teeth taken out.

I swear to you, I planned on finishing a book yesterday and writing a review but with the pain and the nausea and the drowsy-ness it did not happen. All I ate yesterday was yogurt and soup. Soup and yogurt. Oh, and Ensure. So needless to say, I didn't feel all that amazing.

Hopefully by the time you're reading this, I'm feeling better. The pain medication has been a God-send, helping me not feel in horrible pain. And my mom took some time off from work to help me out, since I wasn't able to drive myself home.

My mom has been a God-send too. Seriously. I don't know what I would have done without her.

I'm glad I'm off of school for the summer, because I could not imagine going somewhere for these few days.

So anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend (for those of you who live in the United States), and a happy Friday.

Have you had any surgeries? If not, what are you planning on doing this weekend?

Yours,

*I'm currently writing this 5/23/13, so yesterday.

Cover Reveal: Ruby's Fire

Welcome to the cover reveal for Ruby's Fire! This book is a YA Sci-Fi novel designed by Jay Montgomery. It's set to come out June 26, 2013!
Ruby's Fire by Catherine Stine
Blurb:
If everything about you changes, what remains? Seventeen year-old Ruby, long-pledged to the much older Stiles from the Fireseed desert cult, escapes with only a change of clothes, a pouch of Oblivion Powder and her mute little brother, Thorn. Arriving at The Greening, a boarding school for orphaned teens, she can finally stop running. Or can she? The Greening is not what it seems. Students are rampaging out of control and as she cares for the secret Fireseed crop, she experiences frightening physical changes. She’s ashamed of her attraction to burly, hard-talking Blane, the resident bodyguard, and wonders why she can’t be happy with the gentler Armonk. She’s long considered her great beauty a liability, a thing she’s misused in order to survive. And how is she to stop her dependence on Oblivion to find a real beauty within, using her talent as a maker of salves, when she has nightmares of Stiles without it?

When George Axiom, wealthy mogul of Vegas-by-the-Sea offers a huge cash prize for the winner of a student contest, Ruby is hopeful she might collect the prize to rescue her family and friends from what she now knows is a dangerous cult. But when Stiles comes to reclaim her, and Thorn sickens after creating the most astonishing contest project of all, the world Ruby knows is changed forever. This romantic fantasy set in 2099 on earth has a crafty heroine in Ruby, and a swoonworthy cast, which will surely appeal to the YA and new adult audience.
This book is the second of the Fireseed series, but can be read as a stand-alone.

“What’s your problem?” I snapped again. I hadn’t really meant to, I was just tense and pissy.

The smoke was helping, but what I really wanted was a drink. I didn’t suppose anyone packed any of those little tiny airplane-sized booze bottles in the survival kits.

“I…um…” she stumbled over her words and looked away. Even under her darkened skin, I could see red creeping into her cheeks.

“What?” I was annoyed now. If she was going to complain about my smoking, I was going to lose it.

“I…have to go to the bathroom.”

I laughed. I took one last long drag, getting it all the way up to the filter before I tossed the butt out onto the waves.

“Then fucking go!”

“Where?”

“Didn’t you notice the en suite bath?” I laughed again, and then took a smidgen of pity on her. “Over the side, where do you think?”

“Well…how?”

All right, she did have a point there. Or rather, she didn’t have a point. Or a pointer. I had to laugh again at my internal joke.

“Just…I don’t know…hang your ass out over the edge. Or get in the water.

Whatever.”

“I’d have to take off my suit.”

“So?”

She blushed again.

“What? You want me to hang out in the next room for a few minutes? I promise I won’t gawk at you.”

She didn’t move. Well, actually, she was still fidgeting around; she just didn’t make a move to actually solve her dilemma. If she kept this up, she was going to pee in the fucking raft.

“If it makes you feel any better, I’ve already checked you out front and back, had my mouth on yours and my hand on your tit, so it’s not like…”

She gasped and covered her mouth with her hands. I realized how what I had said sounded, considering she had been unconscious the entire time. I shook my head.

“I didn’t mean…ah, fuck.” I grabbed my shirt and flopped down on my back, covering my whole face up with the garment. I lay there for a moment but didn’t hear her moving at all, so I yelled at her again. “Get on with it!”

She moved. I could hear her shuffle over to the front of the raft and then move around in one place, presumably taking off her shorts and her bathing suit.

“If you are going to get in the water, put the life preserver around your waist first and hold on to the fucking ladder. I don’t want to have to dive in after your ass again.”

“Okay,” she said. “Um…where is it?”

“Right outside the opening – on the left.”

“Thank you,” she said.

“Whatever.”

I listened to her move around a bit more and then felt her move closer to the opening and off to the side. There was a soft splash, and a minute later I heard her pulling herself back up onto the raft.

“There’s something similar to a towel over there,” I said – flinging my arm out in the direction of the back of the raft and waving my hand around. “Make sure you dry off the floor, too.”

“Thank you,” she said.

“Whatever.”

I listened to her move around some more, getting pretty fed up with just lying there, baking, with my fucking shirt over my head.

“Are you done yet?”

“Almost,” she said quietly. Her voice still sounded scratchy. “Okay, I’m done.”

I grabbed the shirt off my face and sat up, looking over at her. She was adjusting the straps on her suit and still blushing.

“Do you know why my…um…throat hurts?”

“Yeah,” I said. I didn’t elaborate. After a minute she finally asked.

“Why does my throat hurt?”

“Because you inhaled a shitload of salt water,” I stated. “It fucks up your throat and your vocal cords. Give it a day; it’ll be better.”

“Thank you,” she said, again.

“Whatever,” I replied, again.

I shoved my hand down into the sealed up container for rations and pulled out a carb bar. I tore it in half and threw one of the pieces at her.

“Eat it,” I instructed. “You can have the other half in six hours.”

“Six hours?” she repeated.

“Are you a fucking recorder? Yes, six hours.”

I knew I was being a bastard, but my brain was working overtime trying to figure out what our best course of action might be. Having her here made it ten times more difficult. If it was just me, I was pretty sure I would be fine. There was plenty of food and water for just me. I could fish, I could take care of myself, and I could stay alive under pretty extreme circumstances.

Having her here with me just…complicated everything.

Sad news: Until I Break

Michelle Leighton has just announced on her blog that she is pulling Until I Break from publishing. Today is the last day that you will be able to buy this book.

I haven’t read this book, but I’ve heard amazing things from many of my book blogger friends and sincerely hope you guys get this book. I’ve gotten it and will read it very soon.

Michelle wrote on her blog:

“When I wrote Until I Break, I could’ve watered down the story, made it more palatable, easier to accept. But as an artist, I didn’t want to cheat Sam and Alec out of their story. As I’ve said before, life isn’t always pretty, but I had hoped that the majority of people would be able to see beyond the ugly to the wonderful story of love and acceptance and healing that was embedded in Until I Break. Sadly, that hasn’t turned out to be the case.

So, rather than risking people misunderstanding Sam and Alec and, therefore, me as a person and author, I’m pulling the book from publication. It will no longer be available in any format from any source after tomorrow. Yes, I could leave it out there to earn money, but every cent would be bitter, knowing that there are some who not only don’t “get” the story, but who are misunderstanding it in a disheartening way.

I would like to say a big ol’ THANK YOU to everyone who read, loved and understood the twisted lives and beautiful love of Sam and Alec. You gave me so much happiness with your outpouring of amazingly supportive words. I’m truly, truly grateful.”

Please, if you ever thought of getting this book, get it now before it’s gone.

As most of you know, I am a guest reviewer for Novel Reflections. Tanya from there has pointed out that there are new FTC guidelines that require for bloggers and websites to disclose sponsored content or free product samples in exchange for free reviews (you can find a summary of the new guidelines here). The latter applies to me, since I get quite a few of free books in exchange for honest reviews.

The guidelines are not laws, merely guidelines, but the FTC does have the power to take action on me as the blogger. These new guidelines will make a few changes to my posts, which isn't much but you will notice some changes.

Anywho, I hope you all have a great day!

FFT: Changes

I've recently looked back at my life these past few years, and I've been a bit shocked by how much I've changed.

Now don't get me wrong, these are good changes (at least, I'd like to think so), but the person I was five years ago is not the same person I am today. I was naïve, and I wasn't aware of a lot of things happening around me. I let myself be walked over and I didn't understand things of the world. Important things. Now, as I look back at the girl I was then, I feel proud of myself for evolving into who I am today.

It's not like I regret being who I was back then. If I wasn't her, I wouldn't be me. I had to go through the things that I did in order to become who I am now. Those things made me who I am, and I wouldn't change them.

But changes are all around us, whether we're graduating or moving, getting a job or being fired. We can't stop the world from changing all around us, and why would we? Changes are what make us better, what help us learn from our mistakes, what help us become resilient.

I found a few quotes that helped me explain what I am trying to say, since these people say it much better.
“Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” –Jim Rohn
“Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.” -C.S. Lewis
“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” -Maria Robinson
“When in doubt, choose change.” -Lily Leung
I hope what I said today helps you all a little bit.

How have you changed? Do you wish to change things in your past?

Cover Reveal: Falling for the Good Guy

Welcome to the cover reveal for Falling for the Good Guy!! This book is Contemporary Romance and is going to be released Friday, May 24th!
Falling for the Good Guy by Violet Duke
Blurb:
From the evil author who left you hanging off a cliff in RESISTING THE BAD BOY comes the second book in the NICE GIRL TO LOVE series: Abby & Brian’s story…

Abby Bartlett is well aware that everyone thinks she’s in love with her best friend Brian. He is, after all, the type of man a nice girl should be with—the polar opposite of the bad boy—the kind of guy who didn’t let his wife’s decade-long illness stop him from showering her with a lifetime of love every second until her dying day. Yes, Brian has been the yardstick against which Abby has measured all other men. But everyone’s wrong; she couldn’t possibly be in love with him.

Because she’s never once allowed herself that option.

It’s taken a while but Brian Sullivan has finally come to terms with being a widower at the age of thirty, surviving the woman he spent half his life loving, a third of it losing. Truth is though, he wouldn’t have ‘survived’ any of it really had it not been for Abby—sweet, incredible Abby—the woman he’s never once had to picture his life without, never realized he couldn’t truly live without. Until now. Now that he’s finally able to love her the way she deserves, the way he knows she wants to be loved…by his brother.

Who’s giving him exactly one chance to speak now or forever hold his peace.
This is the second book of the Nice Girl To Love series.
Age: 18 years and up

This book is the follow-up to:
Book One of the NICE GIRL TO LOVE (serial romance) series.

Abby Bartlett is the quintessential nice girl. Between teaching, volunteering, completing her PhD, and helping her best friend raise his daughter, Abby never gets the chance to be anything but nice. That is, until the all-wrong-for-her man she’s only ever known from afar starts daring her to simply take that chance for herself. His sage advice? Try something wild and fast.

Preferably him.

An unbridled, hotshot attorney with a not-so-little black book, Connor Sullivan has earned himself quite the bad boy reputation. But in his defense, he’s a very conscientious one. He knows far too well that sometimes in life, love isn’t enough…or worse, not even a factor at all. To avoid that misery—and repel the drama—Connor always makes his one and only rule crystal clear right from the start. Absolutely nothing more than a month.

Turns out, a whole lot can happen in one month.
