Ethan ~ a mercenary leader trapped between his growing attraction to Katarina and his responsibility to protect his friends from the evil pursuing her.

Drawn together by a moonstone medallion—an indestructible relic with immense magical power.

Together with Ethan and his mercenaries, she struggles to stay one step ahead of the sorcerer and his minions in a race against time to save her homeland. Fierce battles, ravenous monsters, and bloodthirsty brigands—those are no surprise. But Katarina never dreamed her greatest obstacle could be falling in love.

At first, I was concerned that I would be confused while reading this book because it is the second of the series, but I quickly realized that I had nothing to worry about. Though the series takes place in the same world with the characters vaguely connected to the characters of previous books, each story can be read as a stand-alone (however, since I didn’t read the first book, I can’t be sure). Every main character’s backstory was explained and I was never confused as to what was going on.

We start off with Katarina running away from Zebulon and his reach in order to save the kingdom. She is a strong person who has had to lose her innocence quickly because of all the dangers in her path. She’s suffered a lot at the hands of Zebulon and his accomplices, but she’s still able to get pass that and think of others before herself.

The whole story was action-packed, yet it wasn’t overwhelming. I enjoyed the various plotlines intertwined within each other. The story did feel lagging in a few scenes, mostly because there was a lot of describing—but it was still very helpful in becoming familiar with the world. I never felt it too slow, and I was always entertained.

I did, however, feel that Katarina and Ethan’s relationship came about in an unrealistically quick manner. She meets him, he meets her, and all of a sudden they’re all touchy-feely. They’re always touching, always murmuring sweet nothings without any sort of prelude to it. I felt it very unrealistic and was one of the main things that I had to overlook in order to enjoy the story.

Ethan was a very interesting character with a great backstory, though his over-protectiveness of Katarina was a bit much. That was how he was meant to come off as, and he slowly learned that she could handle herself, so there’s that.

Unfortunately for me, Lilith’s death was terribly anti-climactic. She’s supposed to be this person with a lot of power, and then all of a sudden she gets defeated. There was so much build up and I felt that it felt short. However, the book made up for that slightly with Zebulon, who put up more of a fight.

Caleb, Loki, and the gang were super entertaining to read, though sometimes Caleb seemed like he flipped between two people: the wise mage and the immature kid. I realized later this had to do with the fact he never really had a chance to grow up, but it still felt a little… disconcerting.

I am still holding out hope for Loki and Caleb to become a couple, but that’s just me ;).

I definitely recommend this book to people who want an original setting with a paranormal romance and heroes that you have no doubt will win in the end.
