Tortured Souls by Kimber Leigh Wheaton
Sometimes Rest in Peace isn't an option

Kacie Ramsey sees ghosts—and it's ruining her life. Her mother left, her father blames her, and no matter how hard she tries, she can't keep the ghosts away. Now a new power has emerged. Nightly visions of grisly murders and a relentless predator draw her to the brink of insanity.

When the phantom appears at a party, Kacie's longtime crush, Logan, saves her. He invites her to join the Orion Circle, a group of supernatural hunters with chapters in schools all over the country. Through the Circle, Kacie learns to embrace her spiritual powers, and for the first time in her life she feels in control rather than a victim.

But the Foxblood Demon will not give up so easily. A demented serial killer in life who trapped the souls of the thirteen children he murdered, imprisoning them within the walls of his mansion. Now in death, he plots his return while drawing power from the pure souls of the children. He recognizes something in Kacie he's never seen before—a medium powerful enough to provide a vessel for his tainted soul.

Kacie can't ignore the tortured souls of the children crying out to her every night. With Logan at her side, she will fight the Foxblood Demon. But can they banish this powerful phantom, or will Kacie lose not only her body, but her eternal soul to the monster.

When the author asked me to review this book, of course I said yes. I loved her other books with their fantasy romance and their light themes. Nothing could have prepared me for this novel though. Unlike the author’s other books, this novel is of a darker paranormal mystery with a teenage romance twist.

Though this is not generally the genre I go for, I was able to fully immerse myself in the book (so much so that I ended up peeking out my window paranoid that evil was out there and then moving to another room and closing the blinds).

Kacie was very realistic, never doing something that I couldn’t see myself doing and I related to her a lot throughout this book. She freaked out to all of the circumstances in believable ways and she never did something that was off-character. She definitely seemed older than 15, which is what her age was revealed to be in the book. She’s been through a lot during her short life, though, which would influence anyone. Many times when Kacie would talk about what she’d been through I’d feel for her.

Logan was a sweetheart, and it was really sweet seeing him be with Kacie and protect her from things. However, Logan and Kacie’s relationship seemed to develop extremely quickly, going from a meet to a kiss in the span of a few short moments. I get this though, because they’d been thrust into all of this danger and they bonded. It was still something that I had to oversee slightly. (Though let me say this, the opening of the novel—when they meet and talk for the first time—was definitely movie worthy!)

Kacie’s mother seems to me like a real piece of work. She abandoned her child and then had the guts to act like she could just call and everything would be forgiven. She was a very flat character, only really mentioned when she called, it seems like she was put there only to give Logan some valuable piece of information that could have been given to him through someone else. I feel like the author could have either done more with the mother or taken her out and given the information to Logan another way. I understand the need to want Kacie to have a happy ending and tying up loose ends, but I feel like it could have been done a better way.

The father was another matter, giving up on his lifelong grudge in a few given moments. I wouldn’t have forgiven him as quickly as Kacie, but with him I can actually understand why he was there and why she did forgive him.

The Foxblood Demon was crazy scary and creepy and shall not be mentioned further. *shiver*

All in all, this was a fast-paced book that kept you on your toes and had a bit of romance to lighten up the mood. I definitely recommend not reading this in the dead of night though!
