Welcome to the Carnelian book blitz! This book is a young adult time travel novel and was published January 10th, 2014.

Carnelian by B. Kristin McMichael
Everyone has a past, but for most it isn’t so far in the past as Seth Sangre. His past is literally from thousands of years ago. Seth’s past led him to the present seeking something that might help him save his country from destruction. He has been in the present for over three years now and just found exactly what he has been looking for.

Mari had dreams of college being a fresh start, one where she would start over and not fall for the good looking player like high school. Unfortunately for her that’s exactly what ends up falling into her lap on the first day she moves into the dorms. Now she has to hold to her promise to herself and not fall for the handsome Seth. But he doesn’t plan to make it easy for her. Seth has already marked her as his next conquest. As the semester progresses, Mari learns that Seth might just have a past of his own that’s literally in the past. Suddenly Mari finds her future along with her past put into question. She’s connected to Seth far more than she ever wanted to be and maybe the player isn’t who she thought he was. If Mari can trust her heart enough to follow him, Seth will lead Mari on an adventure of a lifetime and reveal family secrets she never knew existed.

Excerpt

I closed my book and looked up from under the maple canopy to the blue sky above. I had a normal life, but girls in books always went on adventures. I guess that was what going far off to college was to me, an adventure. My future was already planned, but I’d give anything to be one of those heroines. I wanted to live the life I found in these books. I was still lost in thought over the ending when there was a thump on my lap. College students were walking all around and a few tossing a football between them. I looked down expecting to see a football.

It wasn’t a football. The head of a perfectly cute guy was lying across my lap. He had tipped over from sleeping next to me and stayed fast asleep, even after his fall. I looked at him and waited for him to wake. I mean, his fall startled me out of my daydreaming. He didn’t wake. He kept sleeping peacefully.

“Here, take this. We don’t have much time.” Mike’s frantic voice was loud in my ear. Still dazed, I glanced up at him and saw he was holding an envelope out for me to take. My eyes stared at the envelope, but I couldn’t make myself reach out for it.

“Emily.” Mike’s voice was soft but firm. “I know this is a lot to take in, but I need you to concentrate. Take the envelope.” He enunciated the last few words slowly, carefully.

My hands shook as I reached out for it. “I’m not sure I can do this, Mike.” I finally found my voice. “This is crazy. I—I don’t know where to go.” Once I had the envelope in my grasp, it felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.

“You can do this. This life you’ve been living, this isn’t a life for you. Anywhere is better than here.”

I felt the darkness closing in around me. I could feel my throat getting tighter. My breaths were short and quick. If I didn’t calm myself down, I was going to have a full-fledged panic attack. My mind was still trying to process what was happening.

The person I trusted most in the world had woken me up in the middle of the night, just thirty minutes ago, telling me to get dressed and be quiet. I didn’t question Mike then. I didn’t question him when he led me out of the penthouse suite, or when we he led me down the hall to the back stairwell and came out at the back of the casino. I still didn’t question him when I saw his car parked at the end of the dark alley, or when we pulled away from the building without an explanation of any kind. It wasn’t until we pulled onto the highway and the bright lights of the Vegas strip were behind us that I finally asked what was going on.

“You’re getting out of here, Emily. You’re going to get as far away from here as possible,” he’d told me.

It was only then that it hit me. He was helping me escape. He was helping me get away from Jake. I was too stunned to say anything then, and I was too afraid to say anything now.

“Emily, are you listening to me? We don’t have much time.” Mike’s voice was louder now, more demanding. I blinked away my thoughts and looked up at him. He stood a good foot and a half taller than me, his gray hair receding almost to the point of baldness. He was old enough to be my father, and truth be told, he was the closest thing I’d ever had to one.

As I stood here now, I felt like a scared little girl—not sure what to do, looking up at him for the answers.

“The bus should take you to the main station downtown. From there, you choose where to go. You choose how to live your life.” He frowned and then his face twisted into something else entirely—tortured and sad. He and I both knew this was probably the last time we’d ever see each other.

“There’s a passport, social security card, and twenty thousand dollars in the envelope. It should be enough for you to get on your feet and start a new life, one far away from here.” His voice cracked on the last couple words. He cleared his throat, trying to cover up his weakness.

“I don’t want his money, Mike.” I shoved the envelope back out to him to take. I didn’t want any part of him near me.

“It’s my money, Emily. Money that I’ve earned and saved. It’s mine and I want you to have it.”

“It’s still a part of him.” I shook my head. “And I can’t take your money.”

“All those years I looked away. Let him treat you like nothing. All those times I should have helped you. I’ll never forgive myself for letting him hurt you for so long.” He closed his eyes and paused for a moment, his lips forming into a hard, tight line. “Take it. I need you to take it.”

Cover Reveal: Captivate Me

Welcome to the cover reveal for Captivate Me, a young adult paranormal romance! This book will be published April 1st, 2014. The cover was designed by Brittany Bowman.
Captivate Me by S. J. Pierce
Blurb:
“My mom had always told me – when you meet “the one”, you’ll know; they’ll captivate your heart the moment you lay eyes on them. I had always wondered, though, if my mom’s words of wisdom were finite – if they applied to everyone. Maybe those who had found their one great love were the lucky few, and maybe the rest of us would have to settle for less than earth-shattering.”

Seventeen-year-old Kat Walsh is a Gifted – a human with paranormal abilities. With her mom a former Angel and her dad a dream prophet, it’s always been in her genetic make-up to be extraordinary. Unfortunately for her, the world can’t handle the strange or unusual. So when she slips up and uses her powers at her high school in Ireland, the entire student body treats her like a freak – even the ones she thought were her closest friends.

Broken, but hopeful for a fresh start, she allows her parents to enroll her in a boarding school buried deep within the forests of a small Colorado town. At Midland Pines, School for the Gifted, she feels as though she can finally be herself; she makes new friends and even has the attention of the most popular guy in school – Levi. Everything feels normal again… or does it?

Not long after her arrival, weird dreams of an alluring boy whom she’s never met surface during the night, and the eerie, shadowy trees encircling their school seem to call to her. As these disturbing, yet enticing developments intensify, other bizarre occurrences happen – students and staff turn up missing, and mystery visitors leave gifts while she sleeps. With all of these other things vying for her attention, a desperate Levi has to fight even harder to keep her interest. But with the dreams of the attractive boy slowly captivating her heart, Kat has to make a choice – will she settle for ‘great’ Levi, or will she search for her elusive dream visitor, possibly stumbling across ‘amazing?’

From the author of the Alyx Rayer Chronicles, comes a refreshingly different Young Adult series with plenty of love, suspense, and a new take on the Paranormal.

Review on Unteachable

WARNING: This post and the links from it contain adult content. If you are under 18 years of age or if such content offends you, please EXIT now.
This one I decided to read because of a review I read over at Cuddlebuggery. I’m so very grateful I did.
Unteachable by Leah Raeder
I met him at a carnival, of all corny places. The summer I turned eighteen, in that chaos of neon lights and cheap thrills, I met a man so sweet, so beautiful, he seemed to come from another world. We had one night: intense, scary, real. Then I ran, like I always do. Because I didn’t want to be abandoned again.

But I couldn’t run far enough.

I knew him as Evan that night. When I walked into his classroom, he became Mr. Wilke.

My teacher.

I don’t know if what we’re doing is wrong. The rules say one thing; my heart says screw the rules. I can’t let him lose his job. And I can’t lose him.

In the movies, this would have a happy ending. I grow up. I love, I lose, I learn. And I move on. But this is life, and there’s no script. You make it up as you go along.

And you don’t pray for a happy ending. You pray for it to never end.
Age: Adult; 18 years and up
Review: 3.5 butterflies
You know those books that you have absolutely no idea whether they’re going to end happily or not? This was one of those books. When it’s a book about a relationship between a teacher and a student, it’s pretty hard to picture a happy ending to this.

The writing was perfect. It was hopeful, delusional, and shaped the characters perfectly. It was real. So freaking real that I felt connecting to the words immediately. The writing caught my attention from the beginning, and kept it until the very last line. (Which, by the way, had me shrieking, “That’s it?!” but also whispering, “That’s so perfect.”)

I loved Maise. She wasn’t like me in many ways, but I liked her. She was funny, cynical, naïve, and so very wise. She was grown up, but constantly learning. Wise and naïve. You’d think that would be a contradiction, but it isn’t. It works so well in her and I absolutely loved her for it.

Evan is interesting. I actually don’t really know what I think of him. He’s funny, charming, but also broken, like Maise. They helped each other, and that’s why it was such a great book. It wasn’t just about romance, it was a coming-of-age story. It was a story about real life and how it intervenes in a relationship.

There were many different characters; many different things going on in this book. But it was also just about Maise and Evan. Though Maise was my favorite character in this book, Siobhan was a close second. Maybe it was because of the instant connection between Maise and Siobhan, but they truly understood each other.

There’s some books that you can’t write coherent reviews for — you just have to read them and soak in the words. This review isn’t even close to half as good as the book is, and I really recommend it for people who enjoy romance and constantly-doubting-if-it’s-gonna-end-well endings.

Excerpt

Thirty or forty years ago, I wouldn’t have stared at the girl in front of me for more than five seconds before charming her into going to bed with me. But this girl ... this girl was different.

“I think that’s everything,” Nadine said, stepping out of the cottage as Rok flew from the roof.

It was early January. The lights around the cottage reflected on the three feet of snow, and illuminated Nadine’s long brown hair, tinting some strands bronze. Her hair, her dark green eyes, and her red lips contrasted with her fair skin, and the only thought on my mind was that I had never seen a more beautiful girl in my entire life. And I had been alive for quite some time.

Nadine approached me, and as it was every time she looked at me, I fought the urge to reach to her, to pull her against me, to kiss her, to—

“It is everything, isn’t it?” She glanced at the bag slung across my shoulder and the box in my arms. She held her sister’s stuffed bunny in one hand, and a duffel bag in another.

We had been moving to our new location all day, making several trips to and from, and now we were the last ones here.

“I think so,” I replied, quickly glancing to Rok hovering above our heads. “Ready?”

She walked down the porch steps, into the snow, and turned to the cottage. Her eyes scanned it, as if she wanted to take every little detail with her.

She slung the duffel bag on her shoulder and turned the collar of her jacket up. “It’s odd. I feel like I should feel bad for leaving this place after fleeing so many others, after losing so many people.” She sighed. “But I don’t, and I totally should, especially after seeing the new place Ceris got us.”

I nodded, knowing too well that the new place brought her depressing memories.

No matter. It was a new place, a new path on our journey, a new beginning. We were on the right track.

I offered my arm to her. “Let’s go, darling.”

With a half-smile that made my heart skip a beat, Nadine sauntered to me and hooked her arm with mine.

I scooted closer to her, more than necessary, because I could, because I wanted, and transported us out of there.

Review on Blade Song

WARNING: This post and the links from it contain adult content. If you are under 18 years of age or if such content offends you, please EXIT now.
I saw this book was free on iBooks and I was really interested. A kick-ass heroine and a magic-filled world? Definitely my type of book.

Blade Song by J.C. Daniels
Kit Colbana—half breed, assassin, thief, jack of all trades—has a new job: track down the missing ward of one of the local alpha shapeshifters. It should be a piece of cake.

So why is she so nervous? It probably has something to do with the insanity that happens when you deal with shifters—especially sexy ones who come bearing promises of easy jobs and easier money.

Or maybe it’s all the other missing kids that Kit discovers while working the case, or the way her gut keeps screaming she’s gotten in over her head. Or maybe it’s because if she fails—she’s dead.

If she can stay just one step ahead, she should be okay. Maybe she’ll even live long to collect her fee…
Series: Colbana Files, #1
Age: Adult; 18 years and up
Review: 4.5 butterflies
This book was so action-packed I’m still reeling a little bit.

When I first started the novel, I immediately knew this one was going to be interesting from the little definition at the beginning.
aneira [a-nir-a] derived from Antianeirai, found in the Illiad, warrior women, meaning ‘those who war like men’. Also known as Amazons.
That alone captured my attention. I recently read another book that had to do with Amazons, so it was interesting to have a different type of mythology in this novel. This book didn’t have so much to do with mythology as it did with just plain magic.

Kit is a very interesting character. She comes from a bad background, where there were many people she couldn’t trust, and she has a hard time trusting anyone. She’s kickass, willing to hurt those who get in the way of her job and those she cares about, but she also has a kind heart.

Then there’s the plot. It was fantastic. I gulped through the story, wanting to know more and also loving every second of it. Kit’s new job brings her all sorts of problems—from an obsessive vampire to a crazy-ass alpha-bitch (now I can’t read the words “My Lady” without cringing). It also brings a crazy hot and annoying “bodyguard” named Damon that drove Kit up the wall.

And then there was the romance. It wasn’t obvious. Not by far. It evolved so subtly that you only realized the romance and attraction was there when it was plain to see (and then when you looked back you wonder how you didn’t see it earlier). It emerged slowly, but it added a really great part to the book. It was also problematic for both parties, considering that they had people doing all they could not to bring them together.

I loved the magic. When Kit explained how she used it I was fascinated. There were several types of magic in this book and all of them were interesting.

I also loved Kit’s backstory. It added so much depth to her character and that really made her come alive to me. I loved being able to know what Kit had to go through to become the person that she is now—and trust me, that wasn’t pretty. Her past made her present self that much better and I loved the way that the author integrated that.

I can’t wait to read the next of the series, since the book left me hanging. There wasn’t a huge cliffhanger, but there were a few loose ends that I would like to see tied up!

I really want to say more but I don’t want to spoil anything for you, so you’ll just have to read it. If you love action, badassery, and subtle hate-turned-love romance, this is the book for you.

Guest Post

On Writing Tear Jerkers

For my first 27 years, I was considered something of a Pollyanna — one of those bubbly ultra-optimistic people who spout platitudes about silver linings.

The first chink in my happy-armor becomes evident in the pictures from Christmas 1997. My then-husband and I had been trying to get pregnant since April, and I had envisioned that holiday as very different with a baby’s imminent arrival. But I had not made any progress at all, only a pile of negative home tests collecting in the bin.

I don’t even fake a smile. I’m just sort of there, my hair all twisted up in a knot, standing by a tree I felt forced to decorate.

I didn’t know that in this picture, I am actually a few days pregnant, and that I had no idea — really, no clue — what sorrow really was.

In the next five years I would see three babies die in various stages of pregnancy. I would also give birth to two daughters, both under stressful conditions that were a far cry from the happy moon-belly experiences we are sold in maternity magazines.

I was a writer long before I was a mother, and it was a natural fit to chronicle my experiences. As I became more involved in the baby loss community, I heard many more stories, and so often I would think — I could not have survived that.

But survive we do, and I think when choosing a tear-jerker book, it’s that same catharsis at the end. If you have endured a lot in your life, you can think to yourself — I understand what this character went through. You feel camaraderie, a connection with a fellow traveler. If the book takes you someplace darker than you’ve ever been, you can feel as though you have been lucky, that life has smiled on you. Either way, you leave the book feeling a little differently about your own existence.

I knew that the first book in my series, Forever Innocent, was going to wreck people. It’s hard to imagine how it feels to disconnect the ventilator from a seven-day-old baby, but this book takes you right there.

With the second book, Forever Loved, I hope to step a little bit away from the tragedy and focus on the healing. Early readers say you cry just as much, but for a different reason. Watching two people take a bad situation and turn it around is a different form of emotional release.

I am so grateful to have had so many companions on my journey. If you are a baby loss mom, you can meet them at A Place for Our Angels. Book fans can chatter at the Facebook Page for the series or on Goodreads. If you want to read excerpts as I write my books, join the mailing list.

I know now all our lives will include some sorrow. I hope that yours finds joy in equal measure.

Interview

ALL I EVER WANTED is a winter anthology, complete with sledding races, spiked hot cocoa, and ice skating. Are you a winter lover?

Marilyn: I grew up in Wisconsin and now live in Illinois, so I’ve had to make peace with shoveling snow and scraping ice away every winter, LOL, but I can’t say I love the cold temps. I am very, very fond of hot cocoa (both spiked and unspiked), however, and I’ve always enjoyed ice skating and watching the Winter Olympics when they’re on.
Caisey: I love winter clothes, but the actual cold part, not so much!
Rhonda: For the most part, yes! But usually when I’m inside, sitting by a deliciously roaring fire. lol. I hate being super cold, but I do enjoy making snowmen, sled racing, and ice skating. I also like taking outdoor pictures.
Lexi: Maybe I’d say yes if it were a sweltering Indiana summer out my door right now, but instead it’s twelve inches of snow and negative windchills and I’m feeling like I really, really don’t like winter. But I sure don’t mind writing about it.

This anthology is really unique in that all the stories are connected and scenes from one story might appear in another. What was your favorite part about working on this anthology?

Marilyn: I loved the experience of getting to see a scene told in multiple viewpoints by our differing main characters. And it was fascinating to work so closely on a writing project with three authors whose stories I admire so much.
Caisey: Getting to see the many differences and similarities in each of our writing processes.
Rhonda: There was a community created by working so closely together that I’ve never experienced before. It really made me connected to my story and to the others. We were all vested in each other’s novellas, which I loved.
Lexi: We spent a weekend in Louisville to really nail down some of the continuity issues on the anthology. We worked a lot, but we also laughed more than I think I’ve ever laughed in my life. We writers spend an awful lot of time in solitude. It was wonderful to laugh with people who “get” the business like you do..

What was the most difficult part about putting it together?

Rhonda: Oh, all those nitpicky touches, the back-and-forth exchanges of scenes, then going over and over and over it all to make sure we didn’t mess up the timeline. FUN. lol
Marilyn: Yeah, Rhonda nailed it. There were a lot of details!
Caisey: What Rhonda said!
Lexi: To echo what Rhonda said...When we were in Louisville, we sat down at about 10am to start nailing down some of the details. We went page by page through each of our stories. “Oh, here your character says this.” “No, he wouldn’t change it quite like that. Change it to this.” “What’s Maya wearing that night?” “How would Kennedy be acting at the opening address?” Yes! Tons of details! But it was worth it to create what I think is a really unique product.

Obviously, a love of new adult romance brought you four together for this anthology. Name two of your favorite NA reads.

Marilyn: Aside from Lexi’s, Caisey’s, and Rhonda’s stories, which are awesome, I’ve also really enjoyed The Edge of Never by J.A. Redmerski and Violet Duke’s Resisting the Bad Boy.
Caisey: Oh gosh. There are so many good ones it’s hard to pick just two! My two faves of 2013 were probably Escaping Me by Elizabeth Lee and Break It Up by E.M. Tippetts.
Rhonda: Well, I love all of my fellow anthology authors’ works, lol. Seriously, they’re brilliant--make sure to check them out. But if we go beyond those, I also adored EASY by Tammara Webber and TANGLED by Emma Chase. So good!
Lexi: Oh, yes, I echo what everyone else said. Read them first! Obviously we enjoy each other’s work and that’s why we decided to do this together. After them, definitely EASY by Tammara Webber and ONE WEEK GIRLFRIEND (well, the whole series) by Monica Murphy.

Blog Tour: Tick to the Tock (Giveaway)

Welcome to the Tick to the Tock blog tour! This book is a Contemporary New Adult book! It was published January 2014.

Tick to the Tock by Matthew Turner
Dante King is a young twenty something who discovers he’s dying. He won’t live to see his next birthday and time is ticking away to live life before it’s taken from him. With the help of his eccentric and wild-free friend, Wilbur Day, and stubbornly rational cousin, Ethan Knight, the three friends embark on a trip that takes them across Europe, Asia, Australia and beyond.

Dante clings to his past though and the many regrets he has, yearning for acceptance and finally understanding faith. He’s only loved once, and when Daniella Adams comes back in to his life, the pair realise how in love they are – but must battle what they previously did to one another.

This is a heart pulling journey of amazing scenery and adventurous ways, but built on a life that is soon to end. It follows the love of Danii and Dante, finally realising how much they mean to each other but having it ripped away before their eyes. It’s about love and hardship between friends, family, and a dying son’s regret of not being better.

It’s a roller coaster ride of laughs and tears and making the most of life before it’s too late.

Excerpt

I’ve grown up under the assumption I’m a cultured and well-rounded individual, but as soon as I stepped foot in Tibet, I realised how ignorant I am—indeed, how most of us are. Living in a bubble is what I’ve known, being told one thing by the media and another by teachers.

Lhasa is unlike anywhere, and I hope no other tries to compete. This is the kind of place I need to visit on such a trip, but it isn’t what I expected, although to be honest, I’m not sure what I did. The ridiculously cold and fresh high-altitude air isn’t soothing like I hoped. It’s stained with questions I never thought to ask, but now they’re out, they’re difficult to ignore.

The journey from Oia to here was long, several days of planes and buses, although the entire period is somewhat blurry: dreamlike. Headaches mixed with jet lag and exhaustion. It’s hard to tell which moments were real and which were those of dreams. One I’m sure that’s real is a conversation with Wil, as Ethan disappeared to the small airport shop, and Danii slept a few inches from my thigh.

“Dante, m’lad,” he whispered, moving close to my ear and stuffing his right foot underneath his left leg. “May I ask you something... hmm, yes, something that may not be the right thing to ask.” His darting eyes refused to settle. “Of course, you don’t have to answer if you don’t wish.”

“It’s fine, Wil. Go ahead,” I said, and although I had no idea what his question was, I assumed he had many, most of which remained locked away deep inside at the insistence of Ethan, no doubt.

“Right, good, good lad. Well, it’s the headaches, you see. I know they’re bad, but how bad are they?”

“You hear me in the morning, don’t you?”

Playing with his fingers, he shuffled in his seat. “I do, sir. Regrettably so.”

“Yeah, I figured. Danii sleeps like a lion, but you barely sleep at all.”

“It’s the curse of a curious mind, my friend.” Removing his right leg from under his left, he sat on the ground and looked up to me, like a child listening to a grandparent read a story. “So, the pain? What’s it like?”

“It’s bad, and I sense it’ll get worse. I mean, it differs. Some mornings I wake up fine for a few seconds, as the pain sneaks up on me slowly... gradually. But then, other mornings, I awake to this spiking agony. Those are the worst. It’s jarring, you know? Like someone has woken me up with a knife to the chest.”

“I see, I see.”

“Either way, it lingers for a while, getting worse and worse, and although the pills help keep it at bay, they only do so much.”

“Yes, of course. The pain, though... how bad is it? I know I can’t begin to imagine, but...”

“It’s bad, mate,” I said, hesitant to share too much. “My forehead heats up and stings, like someone is holding a dozen matches an inch above it. The pulsing is slow at first, but then gets quicker and quicker, and soon I grit my teeth so hard my jaw aches and my teeth throb, and if I try to open my eyes, I can’t. And I sweat, and shake, and bunch whatever I can grab into my fists: the sheets, a pillow, my thigh...

“And time stops. All I can do is focus on my breathing, hoping I’m not screaming or panting, because I don’t want Danii to experience it. I know she does, to an extent, but I can’t put her through that pain every morning. I don’t want to put any of you through it.”

He looked at me, silent.

“And every single time it happens, it feels like it’ll never end. ‘This is it,’ I think. ‘I’m broken’. But the pills work their magic, or my body fights back, or the tumour decides to offer some mercy. Some days are worse than others, and some last longer, but eventually, my grip loosens, the shaking subsides, and my jaw unlocks and I open my eyes. It still hurts, but compared to that before it, it’s bliss. In a strange way, it helps me appreciate the day more.”

Nodding, he sighed. “You are a very brave man, Dante King.” And he stood up and walked away, hands in his green chino pockets, chin tight to his chest.
